Fox Lane Loses to Scarsdale in Football, 20-0

Scarsdale needed a little more than a half to figure out Fox Lane, but when the Raiders did, it was trouble for Fox Lane.

Scarsdale scored three unanswered touchdowns in the second half to shut out the Foxes, 20-0 in Saturday's Class AA football game at Scarsdale.

It wasn't pretty at all in the first half for either team as there were multiple turnovers for both sides with three interceptions for Scarsdale and two for Fox Lane. Both teams had prime opportunities to score while they were inside the red zone but neither could and the game was scoreless at the half.

"We were close in the first half but we just had to make a few tweaks at halftime on offense and defense and we did that pretty well," Scarsdale head coach Andy Verboys said. "I threw the pen down at halftime and asked the guys how bad they wanted it. I told them if everybody did their job we would be fine and each guy promised me they would and that was the difference in the second half."

Scarsdale came out in the second half raring to go and scored on its first possession. Senior quarterback Brian Bauersfeld used his legs and made some key throws on 3rd-and-long situations to keep the chains moving.

Bauersfeld led Scarsdale down to Fox Lane's 4-yard line and senior captain Matt Freihofner (11 carries, 84 yards, 2 TDs) bullied his way up the middle for a four-yard touchdown for the game's first score at the 8:21 mark in the third quarter.

"It was a really tough first half for me throwing three interceptions, two back-to-back, but we treated the second half as a new game," said Bauersfeld, who finished with 13 carries for 102 yards and a touchdown. "The passing game wasn't there so I used my legs more today as the running game opened up. The line did a great job today and this win was huge."

Fox Lane fumbled on the first play of the very next possession and Scarsdale marched down the field 74 yards on a 13-play drive which was capped off by another Freihofner rushing TD to make it 13-0. The extra point was blocked.

Although Scarsdale dominated the time of possession game in the second half, Fox Lane did have some chances but just couldn't get anything going. Scarsdale finally closed the door on Fox Lane's season for good after Bauersfeld scored Scarsdale's final touchdown on a 7-yard QB keeper with 3:07 left in the fourth quarter to make it 20-0.

"We didn't execute well today and they did," Fox Lane head coach Bill Broggy said. "They made big plays on us and we left some points out there which you can't do with a team that scores like they do."

Karanja Elliot led Fox Lane with 17 carries for 60 yards.

Scarsdale now advances to the first round of the Section 1 Class AA playoffs -- the first time in 21 years according to Verboys – against an opponent yet to be determined.
