MSG Coverage of Ketcham Game

Opening Day in Section 1 football provided only a handful of surprises. Scarsdale, though, did its part to provide some drama and a whole lot of Class AA intrigue.

The Raiders defeated a bigger, deeper Ketcham squad at home on Saturday, coming back in the fourth quarter for a dramatic 29-22 victory. Anthony Cugini broke a 79-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter after Scarsdale fell behind by a point and cap a remarkable opener the Raiders.

"R.C. Ketcham is a great team and we were the underdogs," Cugini said. "Every play today was a challenge. We played smash-mouth football; Scarsdale Raider football."

Ketcham, a rising power in Section 1, had two leads on the Raiders behind a powerful rushing performance from Aaron Morganstern. The senior scored two touchdowns.

"When you come into the season, there are always so many unknowns," Scarsdale coach Andy Verboys said. "This is my fifth year and trying to get the kids to come out of the gates is the hardest thing. When you have a team of (Ketcham's) size come out and smack you in the face the way they did, I was nervous how my guys would retaliate. We were down twice in this game and came back from deficits."

Scarsdale receiver Matt Wheeler caught a pair of touchdowns from Brian Bauersfeld, and converted a fake punt to set up another score in a terrific all-around effort.

Bauersfeld threw for 161 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed for 62 yards. Will Hewitt caught a 40-yard touchdown.

"If we keep playing the way we did today, we could go 6-0," Bauersfeld said. "Freshman year, we went 7-0, which was the first time in Scarsdale history the freshman team did that. We beat some major powerhouses, like New Ro, so we're expecting the same year as freshman year."
